Beer of the Week 101 - 12/28/2011: Cantillon Vigneronne (Vintage 2008)
I consider Cantillon to be the premier producer of Lambic and Gueuze in the world.  This beer was a prime example of precisely why I feel that way.
Vigneronne was produced by adding Muscat grapes to the lambic as it is maturing in oak casks.  The result is a musty, funky, sour aroma with a slight hint of light vinous notes from the grapes.  The taste is absolutely superb; the classic Cantillon funk and sourness is there along with some lactic acid.  Really nice and earthy flavors combine with light fruits like apple, pear and white grapes.  There was also a slight cheese-like aroma and flavor only adding to the earthy character of the beer.
This beer was bottled on Christmas Eve 2008 and I only felt it right to crack it open this year to keep the Christmas feeling alive.
